The requirement of becoming a dentist varies from one state to the other. However, there are common steps that one has to follow to become a dentist.

Here is a step by step guide on how you can become a dentist:

Step 1: Graduate with a Science-related bachelor’s degree

To study dentistry, most of the dental school requires you to have a bachelor’s degree. Based on the classes you will be undertaking in a dental school, it is important to have a science related degree.

Some of the preferred classes are organic chemistry, general chemistry, biology, physiology, and statistics.

Step 2: Pass a Dental Admission Test

It is mandatory to pass the Dental Admission Test, commonly referred to as DAT before joining a dental school. This will test your academic ability and your knowledge of science.

Most of the schools will set a minimum score that one must attain to gain admission. In addition, you will undergo an interview, submit a recommendation letter, and submit your grade points average.

Step 3: Get your dental degree

To get a dental degree, you will be in a dental school for 4 years. You will either get a DDS or a DMD degree.

For the first 2 years, you will attend numerous classes and lab studies. For the 3rd and the 4th years, you will undertake clinical practice. You will be working under the supervision of a dental instructor.

It is vital to ensure that the school you are attending has been accredited.

Step 4: Get a license

You will be required to get a license to practice as a dentist. To get this, you should pass the National Board Dental Exam.

You will also be required to pass a practical exam, provide CPR or a first aid certification, undergo a background check, and pass an interview.

Once you graduate from a dental school, you can choose to further your studies and specialize in one of the dentistry fields.  The specialist course could take up to 4 years so that you can get a license.
