Shift Studio is pleased to present You Are The Landscape, an exhibition of work by Christen Mattix. In our noisy and hectic milieu, these spare, expansive paintings serve as breathing space. Painting the “I” in the landscape, and the landscape in an eye, Mattix’s compositions are an intuitive fusion of human and natural forms. The mysterious content of the paintings are amplified by ambiguous expanses, suggesting a dream that cannot be fully unraveled. With a light touch and attention to detail, Mattix examines both the harmonies and the contradictions between void and form, fragmentation and wholeness, violence and healing.
Mattix received a BFA from Western Washington University and an MFA in painting from the San Francisco Art Institute. In 1999, she did a studio apprenticeship with Chicago-based artist Tim Lowly. Her work has been exhibited nationally including Cellspace and The Lab in San Francisco, Dynamite Gallery Project in Grand Rapids, and Nico Gallery in Seattle. She has taught at Seattle Pacific University since 2006.
The artist will be in attendance on Fridays during the show.
Shift Studio is located at 306 S. Washington St, #105 in the Tashiro Kaplan Building in Pioneer Square. Regular gallery hours are Friday and Saturday 12pm-5pm.
Shift is a collaborative artist’s studio that opened in the fall of 2004 in the renovated Tashiro Kaplan Arts Complex. Shift was established as an artist-run space with the primary goal of supporting emergent, practicing, Northwest artists.
